FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

Type IIR masks comply with the European standard BS EN 14683:2019

The R mean these masks are fluid resistant. This is the main difference between Type IIR masks and standard surgical masks

Type IIR masks offer a higher level of protection than a typical surgical face mask. They stop droplets from finding their way in to respiratory system.

A Type IIR mask’s main quality is its fluid resistant property. It is able to prevent droplets, prays or splashes from passing on to the wearer’s face and subsequently protects the user. The Type IIR masks are also a lightweight option and provide the user with a reminder not to touch their face. This can be an effective way to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses (like Flu and coronavirus).

The type IIR masks have a looser fit and they are not able to filter small particles in the air and are therefore not as effective as a more fitted mask (such as an FFP3 Face Mask)

A respirator or FFP3 face mask offers a different type of protection. They protect the user from inhaling particles in to the respiratory system. This is achieved through an airtight FFP3 face mask fit. There are several APFs (assigned protection factors) available. FFP3 offers the highest level of respiratory protection.

Please read the following information to better understand the differences and application of surgical face masks.

Type IIR surgical masks are barrier masks that are made to protect the user from droplets or splashes from hitting the nose and mouth region. Thereby protecting the wearers respiratory system. Protection is also two-way as the user will also not be able to propel any droplets towards the outside environment. These masks are CE certified & tested to the standards set out in EN 14683.

Type I Mask: bacterial filtration efficiency BFE > 95%.

Type II Mask: bacterial filtration efficiency BFE > 98%.

Type IIR Mask: bacterial filtration efficiency BFE > 98% and splash-resistant.

FFP masks are used to protect the user from the inhalation of airborne particles and droplets. These particles may contain viruses such as coronavirus or Flu particles. The protection can be one way (Valved FFP3 Mask) or two-way (Unvalved FFP3 Mask). They are often described as protective respiratory devices that conform to the standards EN149:2001 and A1:2009. These masks do offer inhalation protection but are often more restrictive as they are fitted to be air tight. The air is filteres through the mask before entering your nose and mouth. In comparison to a Type IIR mask these are less comfortable and may not be suitable for everyone as a day to day protection device for non-specialist activity.

FFP1 Face Mask:  PFE ≥ 80% of aerosols with a total inward leakage less than 22%).

FFP2 Face Mask: PFE ≥  94% with a total inward leakage less than 8%).

FFP3 Face Mask: PFE ≥ 99%, BFE ≥ 99% (Particle & Bacterial filtration efficiency).  Filtering minimum of 99% of aerosols with a total inward leakage less than 2%.

Individuals and companies will have to decide, alongside industry specific guidelines as to which mask types best fit their needs. In some cases both will be needed for different activities within the organization. The fitting of Type IIR masks and FFP3 masks is also something users must inform themselves about.
